On Debian Squeeze you must install ‘timidity-daemon’ to get the daemon. If you don’t have /etc/init.d/timidity you should install this package also.

Thanks a lot!
Works for me with Lenny. Had to disable ESD though, otherwise timidity reported “ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:996:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave” at startup.
